Viokase-V is a medication used primarily to treat dogs that have pancreatic insufficiency, a disease that develops when the pancreas stops producing adequate amounts of digestive enzymes leading to chronic diarrhea and weight loss. Viokase-V is made from natural sources of these pancreatic enzymes and helps dogs digest carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
When giving your dog Viokase-V, make sure to follow the instructions exactly. This medication is given at mealtime, and research has shown that the powdered form works best. Mix it into a dog’s food either using a canned diet or a small amount of water to stick the powder to dry kibble.
Dogs with pancreatic insufficiency should also be fed a highly digestible dog food and tend to do best when they eat several small meals throughout the day rather than one large one. If after one month of treatment your pet’s condition is not significantly improved, call your vet to discuss your options.
