Dog Breed Spotlight: German Shepherd

The German Shepherd is a highly intelligent, large breed of dog. Originating from Germany, the German Shepherd was bred to guard and herd shepherd’s flocks. They make amazing companion dogs who are wonderful protectors who have an average lifespan of 10 – 12 years.

The German Shepherd has a medium in length, double coat of fur that sheds all year long. Due to shedding throughout the year, its coat should be brushed thoroughly one to two times a week.

They are beautifully colored with variations of black, tan, and sometimes red. This breed of dog is known for its great agility and strength. They respond well to training which is why so many service dogs are German Shepherds.

German Shepherds make wonderful protectors that are devoted to their family and other pets in their home. If near other pets they are unfamiliar with, the German Shepherd may be dominating and assertive.
