High Levels of Vitamin D Trigger Kaytee Bird Food Recall

kayteeKaytee is recalling two baby bird feeding formulas due to high levels of vitamin D. Too much vitamin D can cause kidney failure for baby birds when ingested.

The two affected products are Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Formula Baby Birds and Kaytee exact® Hand Feeding Baby Macaw. Please reference the FDA’s website for the exact SKU numbers, UPC codes and “best before” codes affected by this recall.

If consumers have purchased a recalled product, they should immediately stop feeding it to their birds and contact a veterinarian if any clinical signs are observed. Symptoms of kidney damage include a decrease in appetite, vomiting, increased thirst, and frequent urination.

For a full refund on recalled products, customers can call Kaytee at 1-800-529-8331 or email kayteehandfeedingbabybirdrecall@central.com.

Dear Lauren, we had to rush our son’s African Grey to the bird vet yesterday. Clearly not feeling well, Vet not sure what is wrong, doing testing. We called the bird guy Mark that sold her to us. He informs us there has been a recall on the formula we have been feeding her for the last two months. We informed the vet of this and are waiting to her her prognosis. We are quite upset that this has happened, and upset that no one took the time to inform of us this. We would never has found out had we not called Mark about her being sick at the vet.
