Immiticide Shortage Update

merialA few weeks ago, we reported on the shortage of Immiticide, the only medication licensed for treatment of heartworms in dogs.  Luckily, some relief may be on the horizon.

Merial, the maker of Immiticide, in cooperation with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has arranged for the importation of small amounts of Immiticide from its European supplier.  Veterinarians who need to obtain European Immiticide to treat dogs infected with heartworms should contact Merial at 1-888-MERIAL-1.

Heartworm disease is often fatal if left untreated, but it is almost 100% avoidable with the year-round use of a safe and effective monthly heartworm preventative.  Speak with your veterinarian about preventing this fatal disease.
