Cinnamon is one of the most beloved flavors of the season. Whether you’re baking a fresh apple pie or ordering that pumpkin flavored latte, chances are there’s a dash of cinnamon included. This spice adds a lot of flavor and packs a serious punch of antioxidants, so it’s no wonder it’s such a popular addition to many of our favorite foods. But, is cinnamon safe for our four-legged companions?
The short answer is yes. According to the ASPCA, cinnamon is not toxic to dogs and cats. However, it may be irritating for some felines. Cats probably won’t have any issues if they ingest a pinch of cinnamon, but chewing on a cinnamon stick may cause irritation of the nose and sneezing. It’s possible for a large dose of powdered cinnamon to cause stomach upset in cats.
While cinnamon is not known to cause any sort of irritation in dogs, that doesn’t give you permission to start sharing your cinnamon roll with Fido. Opt for healthy treats specially designed with the canine tummy in mind. If you want to share a little of that cinnamon flavor with your dog this fall, try this recipe for Puppy Pumpkin Bites!
