Make your Own Pet Treat Dispenser

by VetDepot on December 28, 2012

As January kick starts a new year, we’re all thinking about the resolutions we need to make. For many, this may mean resolving to drop a few extra pounds. This might ring true for  a few pets out there too.

The best way to help pets burn calories is to encourage a healthy amount of activity. An easy way is to do this is making them work for their treats by using puzzle toys and pet board games. These toys not only offer wonderful mental stimulation but also are great for pets that vacuum down their food and treats without every using a taste bud!

There are plenty of pet treat dispensers available that can also be used to dispense meals. This is a great idea, especially when pets are home alone after getting used to the holiday company.

If you’re into DIY projects, here’s a great one for a homemade treat dispenser:

What you’ll need:

  • A round food container, like for margarine or sour cream or cream cheese, or a similar sized plastic storage container – preferably with a screw-on lid. To be safe, don’t use PVC-based containers.
  • Strong, non-toxic glue.
  • Utility knife.

How to make it:

1. Make sure your container is completely clean and sanitized.

2. Use a utility knife to cut a few small holes in the sides of the container that are large enough for a piece of kibble to pass through.

3. Next, glue an additional lid to the bottom of the container that is slightly larger in diameter. This will alter the way that the feeder rolls and adds variety to the experience for your pet.
