Managing Kidney Disease in Cats and Dogs with Azodyl

Many cats and dogs suffer from kidney failure during their later years. Both chronic and acute renal disease results in an inhibited ability to filter toxins, fluids, and salt out of the blood. Without effective management of the condition, kidney failure is fatal. There is no cure for renal disease; once kidney cells are destroyed, they cannot be rebuilt or replaced. However, when kidney failure is detected early and treated proactively, most pets live out their natural lifespan with a relatively high quality of life. Azodyl capsules for cats and dogs are one part of an overall treatment strategy.

What Are Azodyl Capsules?

Azodyl is a dietary supplement for cats and dogs designed to help manage chronic kidney disease. It contains probiotics, or live beneficial bacteria. The three strains of bacteria it includes are: Enterococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Bifidobacterium longum. Azodyl is also made with psyllium husks to supply soluble dietary fiber.

What Does Azodyl Do?

The probiotics in Azodyl are best known for improving digestive function and comfort. But the Azodyl formulation also delivers powerful support to the kidneys in cats and dogs. This supplement slows kidney degeneration and boosts kidney function. This helps the body better eliminate waste, salt, and fluids from the bloodstream. Supplementation may also reduce some symptoms of renal disease, such as excessive thirst and urination, lethargy, bad breath, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, and weakness.

How is Azodyl Used?

Don’t administer Azodyl to your cat or dog without clearance from your veterinarian. Only use the supplement as recommended by your vet. The capsules are usually given for life. Typically, pets of up to 5 lbs. take one capsule daily, pets weighing 5 to 10 lbs. take two capsules per day, and heavier animals take three capsules daily. Two-capsule doses are divided evenly between the morning and evening; three-capsule doses are generally given as two capsules in the morning and one capsule at night. Azodyl capsules should be given whole, not broken or divided. Products containing live bacteria must be kept refrigerated.

Does Azodyl Cure Renal Disease?

As mentioned above, there is no cure for kidney disease. Chronic renal failure is a permanent condition, but it can be successfully managed. Azodyl is one part of a treatment plan for your cat or dog. Because it is a dietary supplement containing naturally occurring, beneficial bacteria and a natural fiber source, Azodyl is highly compatible with other supplements, drugs, and therapies. It can generally complement other treatments for renal disease prescribed by your veterinarian. Again, though, never make assumptions; check with your vet before beginning your pet on any supplement regimen, Azodyl included.

What Are the Side Effects of Azodyl?

Azodyl capsules are not associated with side effects in cats and dogs. Probiotics in general can temporarily cause some digestive upset as the bacterial environment in the gut is restored to a healthy balance. If you believe you observe an adverse effect in your pet, consult with your veterinarian.

Open the cat’s mouth, put the pill directly in the back of her throat, close her mouth, lift her chill and rub it for 10 seconds. Tell her she’s a “good girl”. She’ll shake her head to let you know it’s been swallowed. Been doing this twice a day for nine months. Cat’s BUN level has improved. Sprinkling it on food is less effective. Refrigeration preserves the bacteria ingredient that needs to be in her gut to help remove toxins from kidneys. Call your vet and ask if its usable. If not, buy another bottle. I know its expensive but its about your cat’s life.
