Most Common Causes of Dog Poisoning

dog-poisonVeterinary Pet Insurance (VPI) recently released information about what types of poisonings were most commonly diagnosed.  Below is the list and the number of claims associated with each type of poisoning between the years 2005 and 2009.

Drug reactions/accidental ingestion of drugs – 5,131

Rodenticides – 4,028

Methylxanthine (chocolate) – 3,661

Plant poisoning – 2, 808

Household chemicals – 1,669

Metaldehyde (snail bait) – 396

Insecticide/organophosphate – 323

Heavy metal toxicity ( lead) – 288

Toad poisoning – 270

Antifreeze – 213

Walnuts – 100

Alcohol – 75

Strychnine – 28

It should be noted that approximately one quarter of the reported poisonings were related to pets accidentally getting into either human or pet medications, so keep those drugs safely locked away!
