Novartis Production Update on Sentinel® and Other Brands

Novartis Animal Health has issued an update on certain of its brands that it stopped producing in early 2012 due to safety violations at its Lincoln, Nebraska plant.

According to Novartis, the pre-production and production processes have resumed for some Novartis Animal Health brands. Production and packaging of Clomicalm® 5 mg strength has resumed at the Lincoln plant and shipment began in June 2012. Testing that is required before full scale production is possible has been initiated for Sentinel® Flavor Tabs. However, Novartis cannot yet give exact dates as to when Sentinel will resume shipment.

Novartis is assuring consumers that it has “invested significant resources to achieve the swiftest resolution of this issue” and they’re “working hard to ensure that normal production resumes as promptly as possible.” Novartis’ production suspension was first reported in January 2012, learn more.

Any update as to when Interceptor will be back on the market? I have 3 collies who have to be on it.

    Thank you.

Do you know if the Deramaxx formula was changed? We were able to finally refill a prescription with our vet in early February and it caused upset stomach in our dog. Prior to the stop production in Jan12, it was the only successful med our dog could take. But now, it seems as though we’ll have to stop giving her this one as well.

Hi Stacey. We spoke with a Novartis representative who said that the Deramaxx formula has not changed. We advise you speak with a veterinarian about any symptoms your dog is having.

I am also concerned about Sentinel. Is there ANY possibility this product will return to the market. My vet is losing hope and so are we. We used Sentinel for 15 years and have had to change to another brand to keep our dogs protected.

    Thank you.

Hi Mary. The maker of Sentinel, Novartis, has said they expect to have Sentinel back on the market this year, but they have not yet given any indication of when. Please feel free to check back with our customer service department at a later date at 1-800-710-9770.

Since there is no Sentinel on the market, should I give my dog both heartgard and program so he can be protected from both heartworms and fleas? What would be the best alternative to Sentinel?

    • VetDepot March 15, 2013, 11:09 am

Vionna, there are several other popular heartworm products like Heartgard and Interceptor, but you should speak with your veterinarian about the best alternative for your individual pet.

I got a call from my vet today saying that they got a shipment of Sentinel! So glad to be able to get my baby back on it!

  • Burton Gotshall April 27, 2013, 2:42 pm

On April 10 Lisa M said she was going to get Sentinel. I haven’t seen a reply.
I used my last pill this month. I hope I will not have to make a change. My dog has been on Sentinel for 11 years and the old dog for at least 5.
