October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month!

rescue dog and owner blogThere are so many deserving animals in need of loving homes all year long, but this is the month to celebrate all the wonderful things adopted dogs bring to their new families. Below are three reasons adopting a shelter dog is the best!

1.) Love at first sight: By the time you’re ready to visit a shelter, you’ve likely already done your homework. You’ve budgeted for your new addition, you’ve researched which breeds/mixes might be best for you, and you’ve discussed responsibilities with the other members of your household. All that’s left is to see which set of puppy dog eyes melts your heart. Chances are, you’ll remember that moment for the rest of your life.

2.) You know what you’re getting into: Whether it’s the shelter staff, volunteers, or a foster family, there’s a good chance someone is going to be able to give you a lot of information about your new canine companion. They’ll be able to help match the right dog with your lifestyle and activity level.

3.) The satisfaction of knowing you saved a life: Shelter dogs always seem to understand that they’ve been given a second chance, and they’ll repay you with years of unconditional love, companionship, and tail wagging.

Cats live in shelters as well as dogs that are looking for their forever home. I’m sorry to see that this advertisement is for dogs only. In all fairness to both dogs and cats I’m sure that it could be worded for both.

    Thank you.

Hi Marilyn. Thank you for you comment. June is typically considered Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, but you’re right, both dogs and cats in shelters are in need of homes all year long.
