The Health Benefits of Bananas for Dogs

dog eating banana blogBananas may not seem like a likely choice when it comes to choosing a treat for your dog, but there are actually quite a few health benefits to sharing a little of that yummy yellow fruit with Fido.

The Benefits

For both humans and dogs alike, bananas are a great source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, vitamin B6, fiber, biotin, and copper. Bananas help boost the immune system, replenish electrolytes, and promote skin and coat health. In moderation, bananas can make a healthy, low-calorie treat for dogs.

But, Don’t Go Overboard

Too much of anything can be a bad thing. Since bananas are high in natural sugar, dogs should only eat them as a treat, not as part of their regular diet. Excess banana consumption can lead to constipation in dogs. Also, dogs should never be fed the peel, which can cause a serious blockage.

Do Dogs Even Like Bananas?

The simplest answer is that some dogs do and some dogs don’t. Start off with just a little bite to test how your dog reacts. Try a swipe of peanut butter on top for an extra-special canine snack.

Remember, you should always discuss any questions or concerns about your dog’s diet and nutritional requirements with a veterinarian.

Woody lived to be 16, about average i’d say, for a very good boy who loved bananas. When I found him back in 1997 he was a quivering, tiny puppy who could hardly walk. Apparently someone placed him there to either get hit or to be discovered. I picked him up and took him home He became a good pal for my wheaton terrier Brutus who was then 17 years old and Brutus also ate banana bites. Brutus and Woody liked to try what i was eating. Thats how it all began. The were both wonderful boys who i think of everyday and keep their pictures on my wall among the rest of my family of kitties and doggies, rabbits, one frog, assorted ducks and one cockateil.

I mix banana to his food ,, he likes it so much that even when he’s already sleeping he immediately sit straight though I’m just peeling the banana, (for me). He is very sensitive to banana, just by saying ‘banana’ his ears perk up.
