Proper functioning of your pet’s digestive system is dependent on a healthy population of bacteria within his intestinal tract. Many things can disrupt the delicate balance between “good” and “bad” bacteria: disease, stress, antibiotic use, dietary changes, etc. Whatever the cause, the effect is the same: diarrhea. In a perfect world, once the underlying issue is addressed, the diarrhea would resolve as well, but this is not always the case. Sometimes, the gut needs a little push in the right direction and probiotics do just that.
Probiotics are defined as “a preparation (as a dietary supplement) containing live bacteria (as lactobacilli) that are taken orally to restore beneficial bacteria to the body” (Meriam-Webster). Products made specifically for dogs and cats contain one or more different types of beneficial intestinal bacteria that help re-colonate the gut and eventually out-compete the “bad” bacteria and significantly reduce their numbers.
