Three Great Dog Breeds for Seniors

happy maltese editedNo matter what stage of life you’re in, having a canine companion by your side can certainly bring a lot of joy. Some breeds thrive with active young couples, some excel with small children, and others make wonderful companions for people in their golden years.

There are a few things to consider as a senior when selecting a pet. Small breeds might be good options because it’s much harder to transport a 60 pound dog than a smaller canine. Also, it’s often wise for seniors to opt for an adult dog that’s not so full of puppy energy. Below are a few breeds that typically make good matches for seniors:

  • French Bulldog: If you’re a senior with plenty of time to chill out with a canine companion, a French Bulldog just might be perfect for you. Because of their short snouts and stature, these little dogs aren’t exactly built for intense exercise, but they do make wonderful partners for daily strolls.
  • Maltese (pictured): If you’re looking for a friendly little dog that won’t shed a whole lot, a Maltese might be the right fit. This lovable little breed makes a wonderful lapdog, perfect for providing seniors with plenty of affection.
  • Pembroke Welsh Corgi: For active seniors, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi might be a smart choice. This breed is intelligent, sturdy, and enjoys a moderate amount of activity.

Remember, there’s not a one-size-fits-all choice for seniors and there are plenty of mixed breeds in shelters that can make wonderful pets. Just be sure to carefully examine your activity level and lifestyle before deciding on a new canine companion.

I am a senior with a Bichon Frise and I must say she is the best companion pet ever. She is the 7th dog in my life, always had two at a time but now only one. You should consider adding the Bichon to this list.

I’ve been telling my daughter that I so want a French bulldog. I live with her, four grandchildren and their stepfather. We currently have a Newfoundland and two cats. I’m a double amputee and confined to a wheelchair. But they’re just so cute.

Dogs are awesome companions for anyone, but especially the elderly. It is amazing how a dog can lift one’s spirits and be the friend they need.

Yorkies are also a great dog for seniors. I am a disabled senior and my 2 are life savers, literally. They can go with me almost any where. Days I don’t feel well, they will lie in bed with me. They are small and don’t need a lot of exercise. They make great apartment dogs. They, or any pet will help with depression and loneliness. Mine are my family and I can honestly say that I would not be here today if not for them.
