Liver disease is common in both dogs and cats. Many different, specific types of liver disease can all have similar and rather unspecific symptoms: loss of appetite, lethargy, vomiting and sometimes a yellowing to the gums, skin and whites of the eyes. Your veterinarian may suspect a liver problem based on your pet’s history, a physical examination and blood work, but to know exactly what disease is to blame, additional diagnostic tests are usually necessary. These may include abdominal x-rays, ultrasounds, specialized lab work or even liver biopsies.
No matter what the underlying cause of your pet’s liver disease is, supporting the remaining healthy liver tissue and promoting the recovery of the affected parts of the organ is a goal of treatment. Thankfully, nutritional supplements are now available that do just that. S-Adenosylmethionine(SAMe) and silybin have been extensively studied and are widely prescribed for the treatment of liver disease in both dogs and cats. One product, Denamarin, contains both S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and silybin, giving owners an easy way to give both supplements at the same time.
