UK Cat Sets New Record for World’s Loudest Purr

loudest purr record blogMerlin, a 13-year-old rescue kitty from the UK, recently landed himself a Guinness World Record. Merlin’s purr was measured at 67.8 decibels, the loudest registered purr of any domesticated cat.

To get a better idea of just how noisy 67.8 decibels is, think of the volume of an average conversation or a running shower.

“If the telephone rings I do get people asking me what’s that noise in the background, I tell them it’s the cat but I don’t know if they believe me,” said Tracy Westwood, Merlin’s owner.

The previous record was held by another British cat, Smokey, whose purr was measured at 67.68 decibels. To learn more about why cats purr, click here.
