The 138th Westminster Dog Show is just a few weeks away, and they’ll be a few new additions this year. The AKC has officially recognized the Rat Terrier, the Chinook, and the Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, which means all three breeds will be able to compete in the 2014 show.
Here’s a little more information about the new additions:
The Rat Terrier (pictured above) was blended from breeds like the Smooth Fox Terrier, the Miniature Pinscher, and the Italian Greyhound. It is one of the few breeds that was created in the United States. Rat Terriers are known for their intelligence and high activity level. They need a good amount of exercise and entertainment to keep them mentally stimulated and happy.
The Chinook is a rare breed known for its athletic nature and loving personality. It was originally bred as a sled dog in New Hampshire, which explains its thick double coat. Chinooks do best with an active family, as the breed can become destructive if given too much downtime. Given the right home, these dogs make loyal, affectionate family pets.
Portuguese Podengo Pequeno
The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno is a little dog with a big attitude. They are known for their alert nature and make superb watchdogs. The breed was originally bred to hunt rabbits, so they do have a strong prey instinct. The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno makes a lively, fearless, and loyal companion.
